Sounds of Eretz Yisrael in America

American Jews have engaged with Israeli musical forms from the 1920's through today.  What was the impact of Israeli music on American Jewish life before Israel became a state?  How did it develop and change after the Six-Day War? Cantor Cannizzaro will take us on a musical journey to see how the music of Israel grew in the consciousness of American Jews and entered American culture generally.  This class will explore Israeli dance music, examine what American Zionism is and how Israeli music navigated the ongoing relationship between American Jews and Israel. We will also show how pride in the new state of Israel empowered Jews to celebrate Israel through its music with a broader American public. 

This class will be offered twice - Wednesday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m., and Thursday, October 12, at 11:30.  Lunch will be served on Thursday.
