Presentation of Tallit (Optional and can be virtual)
Name of presenter and relationship to child
(Example: Jacob Cohen - Grandfather)
If the child will be given a tallit, the service begins with a presentation. This is also an opportunity for a short (less than one minute) speech to the child. While the parents can do this, parents will still have an opportunity for their main speech later in the service.
Ark Opening before the Torah Service (Optional)
The honoree will be called to the bima to open the ark, returning to their seats afterward. If they cannot attend physically, we would bring their Zoom box onto the screen while the ark is opened.
Please choose no more than three individuals (or couples).
Passing of Torah
Names of child’s parents (and grandparents if desired):
Presentation of Yad (Optional and can be virtual)
While most students use our yad for their Torah reading, some families give the bar/bat mitzvah their own yad. This can be another opportunity for a very short (under 30 seconds) talk to the bar/bat mitzvah.
Name of presenter and relationship to child.
Torah Aliyot
Confirm the number of aliyot with your tutor. Bar/Bat Mitzvah will always be the last aliya. Parents are usually immediately before (second to last). Everyone participating in the alliya must be 13 or older, and each alliya needs someone Jewish who is able to read or chant the Hebrew.

The Union for Reform Judaism (the national Reform Movement to which Schaarai Zedek belongs and which runs our regional youth groups and summer camps) provides a $250 gift certificate toward future NFTY travel to Israel to all b’nai mitzvah students who are members of Reform congregations. They have started requiring parent email addresses of our students in order to provide the certificate so that they can contact you when your child is eligible.
We may have questions about details, such as spelling or missing information.
Please tell us who will be the primary contact and how to reach you.
